Confirm identity and measurement coverage
Match the asset tag or serial number to the instrument and check the calibration date, functions, ranges, units and test points. Confirm that the certificate covers the function you use. A result for one channel or range does not automatically cover another. Read the notes and limitations, including any points not tested or any special conditions applying to the reported results.

Separate as-found from as-left
As-found results describe the instrument before adjustment or repair. As-left results describe its condition after the work. Where nothing changed, the report may use a combined designation. Do not assume missing as-found data means the instrument was previously within tolerance. If adjustment occurred, retain both sets: an acceptable as-left result does not erase a possible problem with earlier measurements.

Read error, tolerance and uncertainty together
Check the report’s sign convention for error or correction rather than applying the number by guesswork. Tolerance is the permitted limit. Measurement uncertainty describes how well the measured value is known; it is not extra tolerance. If a conformity statement is included, its decision rule explains how the result is judged. Traceability requires a documented calibration chain to a reference, with uncertainty considered. It does not automatically establish suitability for your particular process.

Act on an unsuitable or incomplete result
If the results do not support the intended duty, hold the instrument from that use through your quality process and ask the responsible technical team to assess adjustment, repair, replacement or an authorised restricted use. Review which earlier measurements could be affected by an out-of-tolerance as-found result. Record the decision, certificate and next review requirement in the register. Ask Scaftech about unclear results within Industrial Instrument Calibration; do not silently change a tolerance to obtain a pass.
