Start with the question behind the request
Tell the examiner whether the work concerns a new fabrication, an in-service lifting point, a repaired weld or a suspected defect. Include the relevant drawing, material information and previous findings. A request to examine a particular weld is different from a request to assess the complete lifting point and its attachment to the structure.

Confirm that MPI suits the material and area
MPI depends on magnetising the material. It is not the right method for aluminium or other non-ferromagnetic materials, and the material should not be assumed suitable simply because it looks like steel. Surface condition, access and the orientation of an indication affect the examination. The qualified examiner should select the procedure and identify any areas that cannot be covered.

Agree preparation without hiding the evidence
Provide photographs that locate the padeye and show its surrounding welds, then agree safe access, cleaning and any coating removal before the visit. Do not grind away a suspected indication or arrange an unapproved repair to make the surface look acceptable. If the concern affects safe use, follow the site isolation process while the responsible technical team assesses it.

Ask for a finding you can locate and act on
Request a report connecting each examined area to an equipment ID or drawing location. It should distinguish observed indications, their assessment against the agreed acceptance criteria, examination limitations and required follow-up. An indication needs interpretation; a report is not a new design rating. Discuss repair and re-examination separately where needed.
